Timeline editing upgrade is limiting function

In a recent Descript upgrade, it seems the ability to see the audio file in the timeline during editing been removed. So here's my specific problem: The "shorten word gaps" feature sometimes removes half of a word and so I need to extend that part of the video to get it back. Now when I'm editing, I can't see where the word ends, so I'm extending based on trial and error. I have to extend, replay, edit again, replay... it feels like I'm stabbing in the dark to see where the word ends and I can't believe this is any sort of upgrade to what we had before.

I just had to restart and get the newest version....
Now every time I make an edit by dragging the script in the timeline the timeline zooms out (to some arbitrary amount) and the waveform disappears, so I can't even scroll to see on the timeline where one speaker stops and then next begins... This. Is. FRUSTRATING.
