Add Advanced Filtering Options to Stock Footage and Audio in Descript
Shaun Anthony
I’d like to request the addition of advanced filtering options to Descript’s stock media library (videos, GIFs, images, and audio) to make it easier to find relevant footage and audio for video projects. While the current search functionality is helpful, it can feel broad and time-consuming when trying to pinpoint specific types of content, especially for users working on niche or highly stylized projects. Adding filters would streamline the process, improve workflow efficiency, and enhance the overall editing experience.
Proposed Features:
Content Type Filters:
Options like “Stock Video,” “GIF,” “Background,” “Music,” “Sound Effect,” or “Image” to narrow down the media type instantly.
Example: Filter to show only “Music” or “Stock Video” instead of browsing mixed results.
Category/Thematic Filters:
Predefined categories such as “Nature,” “Technology,” “Business,” “Abstract,” “Cinematic,” “Comedy,” or “Ambient” for both footage and audio.
This would help users quickly find thematically relevant content (e.g., “Corporate” music or “Drone Shots” for video).
Duration Filters:
Sliders or dropdowns to filter by length (e.g., “Under 10 seconds,” “10–30 seconds,” “1–3 minutes,” “Over 3 minutes”).
Useful for matching stock media to specific scene lengths without manual previewing.
Style/Tone Filters:
Options like “Upbeat,” “Dramatic,” “Minimalist,” “Retro,” “Modern,” “Calm,” or “Intense” for audio and video.
Example: Filter for “Upbeat” music or “Cinematic” footage to match a project’s mood.
Resolution/Orientation Filters (for Video):
Options like “4K,” “1080p,” “Vertical (9:16),” “Horizontal (16:9),” or “Square (1:1)” to match project specs.
Example: Filter for “Vertical” footage for social media projects.
Keyword Tag Filters:
Dynamic tags based on content metadata (e.g., “Forest,” “Crowd,” “Guitar,” “Explosion”) that users can combine or exclude.
Example: Filter for “Ocean” + “Slow Motion” footage or “Piano” + “Soft” audio.
Source/Provider Filters:
Option to filter by stock media provider (e.g., GIPHY, Descript’s native library, or other integrations) to align with licensing needs or preferences.
Use Case:
Imagine I’m editing a promotional video in Descript and need a 15-second clip of “slow-motion nature footage” in 4K for a drone-style intro, paired with “calm ambient music” under 1 minute. Currently, I’d have to manually search and preview dozens of options. With filters, I could set “Nature” + “Slow Motion” + “4K” + “Under 30 seconds” for video and “Ambient” + “Calm” + “Under 1 minute” for audio, instantly narrowing down relevant results. This saves time and ensures the content fits my vision.
Benefits:
Time Efficiency: Reduces trial-and-error when browsing stock media.
Precision: Helps users find content that aligns with project needs without leaving Descript.
User Experience: Makes the stock panel feel more intuitive and professional, matching the polish of Descript’s AI editing tools.
Creative Flow: Keeps editors in the zone by minimizing distractions from irrelevant results.
Implementation Suggestion:
Add a “Filter” button or dropdown next to the existing search bar in the Stock panel. When clicked, it could reveal a collapsible menu with the above options, allowing users to toggle and combine filters as needed. A “Reset Filters” option would clear selections for flexibility.
Thank you!

Sort music by length, music genres, emotions
Daniele Catalanotto
Often when I create a video I'm looking to have a song that covers the whole video. So it would be great to be able to search songs that are for example over 3 minutes long and see only those.
Additionally it would be great to also filter music by genres, for example: pop, jazz, hip-hop, classical.
Or by emotion: motivation, sad, convincing, thinking, etc.
With those three filters it would be much quicker to for example find a 3 minute song that is motivating and pop-like.
