Persistent Workspace State: Remember Panel Sizes and Timeline Height
Joe Buchmann
Currently, Descript resets the internal UI layout to default values every time the app is launched. For users on high-resolution displays (like 4K), the default panel sizes—especially the Timeline height and Sidebar width—are often inefficient.
I have to manually resize the Timeline and Script panels every single morning to reach my preferred "working state." Please update the app to remember the last-used dimensions of all internal panels (Script, Canvas, Timeline, and Sidebars) across sessions. This would eliminate the daily setup friction for power users.

Preserve workspace/UI layout and zoom settings
Joe Buchmann
Please stop automatically changing the workspace layout, panel sizes, and timeline zoom as I move between different editing tasks.
I intentionally arrange the Descript workspace the way that works best for me, but the UI frequently changes it automatically.
For example:
- Clicking into the script can dramatically change the timeline zoom.
- Selecting an object on the canvas can zoom the timeline back out to show the full scene.
- Moving between projects or returning to a project can change the width of the script/editor area, properties sidebar, and other panels.
- Recording video collapses the timeline, but when I finish recording, my previous timeline layout is not restored.
- Even reopening the timeline with Ctrl+T does not restore it to the height I was previously using.
I constantly have to zoom the timeline back to where I was, resize panels, adjust the timeline height, and rebuild the workspace layout I had already configured.
Please preserve the user's workspace state unless the user explicitly changes it. Ideally, Descript should remember timeline zoom, timeline height, panel widths, sidebar sizes, and other workspace layout settings, both while switching between editing modes and when leaving and returning to a project.
Automatic UI changes may be intended to make certain tasks easier, but for an established workflow they create unnecessary friction. I want to set up my workspace once and have Descript leave it that way so I can focus on editing rather than repeatedly rearranging the interface.

Remember Timeline Panel Height

Please make Descript remember the custom height of the timeline panel & Layers.
I resize the timeline to give audio tracks and waveforms more vertical space, but the panel does not consistently retain that size. This means I have to resize it again while editing or after reopening a project.
Ideally, the layer height should persist globally or per project until the user changes it again?

Stop Timeline resize upon hiding and viewing.

Often, I am wanting to view multiple scenes at once in the timeline, so, I resize the timeline to be small, so I can view all across my screen, but then I need to click the "hide timeline" button to do something else. When I click "show timeline" it always reverts back to the default. This is SO SO SO frustrating, needing to resize over and over again. I would like to keep whatever sizing I have made, until I change it, or exit the project or Descript altogether.

Persistant timeline
Michael Marchment
Please, PLEASE, have an option so the timeline is always visible. I can't see any setting for this, so could it be added as an option to be persistent and stay there at all times, not minimised?
This never used to be a problem, and now it's forever hidden.
A big UX problem, too, is that multiple location options are hidden in the desktop app. Why is this the case? Why are there 2 'View' options, both with entirely different options?
Also, the audio sizing on the timeline should retain what I last chased, or be an option to persist. I really despise UI/UX that never remembers the changes I make in the workspace.
What I mainly use Descript for is the "studio audio" feature, nothing else (It's definitely first in its class), so I don't need transcription or anything. I wish I could easily turn this off and have it off forever because I don't need it. I'm sure having this as an option could be a potential server bandwidth saver, too, not transcribing everything that comes through. I liked the prompt before asking how many speakers there were, but there was no option to opt out of transcribing. Why?
