Only remove silence from "Shorten Word Gaps" (Strip Silence)
planned
Bryan Schiele
If there's laughter or unknown words after transcription, the Shorten Word Gaps feature wants to remove those sections, leaving a choppy edit if you wanted to select "Apply to all". For example, in this screenshot, the name "I-17" (a road here in Arizona) isn't recognized and would be cut if I used the "Apply to All" option.

I used to use an editing tool (Ferrite) that gave you the ability to automatically remove all the gaps between speech in an individual track with one click without adjusting the time line. In multitrack recordings this was useful at the start of editing to auto-delete everything except the current speaker, so getting rid of background noise, throat clearing etc that interfered with the speaker.

I wonder how many customers (meaning end users of the videos produced by Descript) would like to have an option to play the video or podcast with a mode that lets them "skip silence" but if they wish be able to listen to it. Would it be more interesting to put this option as an end user option in addition to an editor option?
For example:
- I create a video or podcast and I really don't want anybody to hear the gaps, so I remove them. Makes sense.
- I create a video and I don't mind if the gaps are left in the material because some of my audience really want the uncut version, but they may want to have a way to skip forward from time to time also. Makes sense also.
So, the toggle might be useful in both the editor and in the player so the user can turn it on or off... Sort of gives Descript a value add if both options are available...

YEAH! I hope Descript will give us a threshold picker to identify what is actual silence. Sometimes people are whispering or getting quiter in the end of their sentence which is also recognized as Word Gaps. If we have control, showing Descript what is actual Silence in the recording, it would help avoiding mispicks.

SO glad this is planned!!!

So glad to see this feature is being planned.
For my personal workflow, the true godsend would be the option to cut silence only when the video is still. The large majority of my editing deals with this situation by hand.

Yes! I also want a feature, that simply scans silence and removes it! Or at least a way to easy go through the transcript to find the issues, which isn't easy as I describe here: https://www.loom.com/share/6d2a93de1816465d93e8d0ea05ddc0cd

Yes- was about to put this in myself. The word gaps feature is nearly useless to me (although we need it!) because many of the gaps have 1/ laughter 2/ crosstalk that we
don't
want to cut--but the silences still do want to find and shorten! This feature currently doesn't distinguish--so we just don't use it. Would LOVE this option to be added so we can use it.Belief Hole Podcast
Just to chime in - this is my #1 hope for Descript. I was so excited for this feature, but the "Shorten Word Gap" feature is essentially useless for me. Almost every sentence is chopped at the beginning or end because the words are grey (not transcribed). This is often if two people are talking or laughing, which is frequently in our podcast (lots of laughs) and you don't want to lose that! :)
I would love to simply have an option to protect this audio from getting chopped when using Shorten Word Gap, or have a threshold setting as some have mentioned. With a 1-2 hour long podcast, this would save tons of time. But using this tool as it is actually adds time due to the constant need to restore the audio bits.
