Let’s say you’re editing an interview between two people, let’s call them A and B. A waffles a bit going into his question while B listens. So you want to lose the waffle and cut to the start of the question. When you make the cut, it cuts both audio and video of both speakers so you get a jump cut which I then need to cover. At this point, I cut from a two shot to a listening shot or a single of the talker to hide the jump. But any editor will tell you that cutting the sound and the picture at the same time is jarring. You should dovetail them. At the moment I’m living with it but it would be so much slicker and more professional (and nicer for the viewer) if I didn’t have to.
On editing software like Premiere Pro you can simply drag the picture across, so you’re looking at B’s listening shot for a bit longer while you cut out A’s waffle. Then once you are past the cut point in the audio, you can cut the picture back to A so you see him ask the question.
But I can’t do this on Descript, at least, not without some very complicated and slightly scary faffing around in the sequence.
Do you have - or can you make - a simple way to do this?
